Critic Reviews

94/100 Ray Jordan

Galafrey uses only free run juice here, which heightens its purity and almost pristine characters. There's a regional and varietal spiciness that works with the citrus and lemon peel nuances on the nose. The Palate is fine with a degree of tension balanced with deep Riesling intensity. Has a long racy finish’

About Galafrey

Galafrey Wines is a family-owned boutique winery established in 1977 by Ian and Linda Tyrer in the Mount Barker region of Western Australia. Situated on about 12 hectares of primarily dry-grown vineyards, the estate cultivates a broad range of varieties including Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Merlot and the lesser-seen Müller-Thurgau. The soils — characterized as gravel-loam — combined with an elevated site (~600 m) and a cool climate reminiscent of Bordeaux allow Galafrey to focus on low-yield, high-flavour fruit, underlining their commitment to terroir-driven wine.

Today the business is led by their daughter, Kim Tyrer, who stepped into her role after her father’s untimely passing in 2003, bringing an intuitive, self-taught winemaking style together with a strong grounding in place and practice. Under her direction, Galafrey has continued to emphasise classic regional varietals like Riesling and Shiraz, while also experimenting with whole-bunch fermentations and pushing boundaries with some of the whites. The experience at the cellar door is intimate and welcoming, run by the family themselves, and many visitors highlight the personal service and the strong sense of place reflected in each bottle.
